ISS (International Space Station) Wiki

Image
The   International Space Station   ( ISS ) is a   modular   space station   (habitable   artificial satellite ) in   low Earth orbit . It is a multinational collaborative project involving five participating space agencies:   Roscosmos   (Russia),   NASA   (United States),   JAXA   (Japan),   ESA   (Europe), and   CSA   (Canada). [7] [8]   The ownership and use of the space station is established by intergovernmental treaties and agreements. [9]   The station serves as a   microgravity   and   space environment   research laboratory in which   scientific research   is conducted in   astrobiology ,   astronomy ,   meteorology ,   physics , and other fields. [10] [11] [12]   The ISS is suited for testing the spacecraft systems and equipment required for possible future long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars. [13] The  ISS p...

The   National Aeronautics and Space Administration   ( NASA   / ˈ n æ s ə / ) is an   independent agency   of the   U.S. federal government   responsible for the civilian   space program , as well as   aeronautics   and   space   research. [note 1] NASA was  established in 1958 , succeeding the  National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics  (NACA). The new agency was to have a distinctly civilian orientation, encouraging peaceful applications in  space science . [7] [8] [9]  Since its establishment, most US  space exploration  efforts have been led by NASA, including the  Apollo   Moon landing  missions, the  Skylab  space station, and later the  Space Shuttle . NASA is supporting the  International Space Station  and is overseeing the development of the  Orion spacecraft , the  Space Launch System ,  Commercial Crew  vehicles,...

10 Crazy Facts You Didn't Know About Space There is so much about space, our solar system, and the galaxy that we still don't know!  Space is vast. With billions of galaxies and stars, and planets in our own solar system yet to be fully explored or understood, scientists' knowledge of space is always evolving.  There are, however, some really cool things we know about space right now!  We've compiled a list of what we think are ten stellar facts that we hope you'll think are out of this world!   1. SPACE IS COMPLETELY SILENT There is no atmosphere in space, which means that sound has no medium or way to travel to be heard.  2. THE HOTTEST PLANET IN OUR SOLAR SYSTEM IS 450° C. Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system and has an average surface temperature of around 450° C. Did you know that Venus isn't the closest planet to the sun?  That is Mercury.  You would think that Mercury would then be the hottest, but Mercury has no atmosp...

Life Wiki

Image
Life   is a characteristic that distinguishes   physical entities   that have   biological processes , such as   signaling   and   self-sustaining   processes, from those that do not, either because such functions have ceased (they have   died ), or because they never had such functions and are classified as inanimate. Various forms of life exist, such as   plants ,   animals ,   fungi ,   protists ,   archaea , and   bacteria .   Biology   is the science that studies life. There is currently no consensus regarding the definition of life. One popular definition is that  organisms  are  open systems  that maintain  homeostasis , are composed of  cells , have a  life cycle , undergo  metabolism , can  grow ,  adapt  to their environment, respond to  stimuli ,  reproduce  and  evolve . Other definitions sometimes include non-...

Plasma (physics) wiki

Image
Plasma   (from   Ancient Greek   πλάσμα   'moldable substance' [1] ) is one of the   four fundamental states of matter , first systematically studied by   Irving Langmuir   in the 1920s. [2] [3]   It consists of a gas of   ions   – atoms or molecules which have one or more orbital electrons stripped (or, rarely, an extra electron attached), and free   electrons . Plasma can be artificially generated by heating a neutral gas or subjecting it to a strong  electromagnetic field . The presence of free charged particles makes plasma  electrically conductive , with the dynamics of individual particles and macroscopic plasma motion governed by collective electromagnetic fields and very sensitive to externally applied fields. [4]  The response of plasma to electromagnetic fields is used in many modern technological devices, such as  plasma televisions  or  plasma etching . [5] Depending on temperature a...
